Abstract

The impact of climate change on a crop production system, particularly on maize producing smallholders is considered to be strong in our country in which maize is a source of food and income. Therefore, a better understanding of smallholder farmers’ perception of climate change and adaptation strategies of maize producer is essential to develop proper measures that will avert its adverse effects.

Abstract

The study was conducted in Alaje district of South Zone of Tigray region to evaluate farmers’ perception on adaptation strategies on response to range land degradation and climate change effect on livestock feed production. Data was collected from 212 respondents within 3kebelle of two agroecology (highland and midland) using simple random sampling techniques for collecting information about HHs using questionnaire, kII and FGD with farmers and experts. Dropping pin technique was used to collect data on species composition, biomass, and palatability from the different grazing systems.  In each of the grazing systems, a sampling block of 1.2km x1km was demarcated in a separate way.

Ethiopia is one of the countries affected by the adverse effect of climate change, other biophysical environmental factors and dependency on rain-fed agriculture. Tigray region has a problem of land degradation in general and particularly the study area 'Enabered'. The study area is known with many problems such as recurrent drought, flood, food insecurity, and chronic famine.

Abstract

 In countries like Ethiopia where climate change imposed recurrent droughts cause crop failure and death of livestock, identifying and adopting climate smart agricultural practices can be considered as a panacea. In line with this the agricultural growth program has been implementing varies climate smart agricultural technologies in different parts of Ethiopia and yet there is little information on their contribution to income and food self-sufficiency and factors affecting their adoption. 

Abstract

This study is an investigation of application of soil and water conservation practices as its’ contribution to the livelihoods of smallholders of Sonka, Mender 49 and Mender 46 Kebelesin Bambasi District of Northwestern Ethiopia. In order to address the objectives, both primary and secondary data were used for the study.
